Adoption Application

A successful adoption depends on both the selection of the right Basset Hound for your household and your understanding of the responsibility taken when you adopt a rescued dog. So that we may assist you with making this most important decision, please answer the following questions as completely as possible. We appreciate not only your interest in adoption, but the time you take with these questions. Your application will be processed in a timely manner and you will be contacted. Please keep in mind that we here at BellyRubs Basset Rescue are all volunteers--with families and regular jobs--but work as quickly as possible to place Bassets into loving homes. Thank you for your patience.

BellyRubs Basset Rescue adoption fees are as follows:

  • Bassets (full-blooded) under the age of 8 years: $200.00
  • Bassets (full-blooded) over the age of 8 years: $100.00
  • Basset Hound Mix: $100.00

These fees cover just a small portion of the cost incurred by the rescue to provide needed care-- i.e., spaying/neutering, vaccines, heartworm treatment/preventative, food/shelter, and any other treatment deemed necessary to result in a healthy dog. Please Note: A scheduled home visit by a Basset Rescue volunteer is required before adoption.

If you decide to adopt, there is a 14-day trial period with the dog. If at the end of that 14-day period you decide for any reason that you cannot keep the dog, do you understand that the basset must come back to BellyRubs and your money will be returned?

We'd like to list some well-known facts/traits about the Basset Hound, especially for those who've never had the privilege of being owned by a Basset…….

Bassets are not small dogs, they just have short legs. Bassets, with their long ears and flappy lips, can be messy, and are known to drool at times. The Basset voice, barking or howling, can be loud and insistent. Bassets can have a very distinct hound body odor. Bassets do shed, some more than others. The trademark long Basset ears are prone to infection if not kept meticulously clean inside and out. Bassets are true scent hounds and therefore must be kept contained by a fence or on a leash at all times. Once they put their nose to the ground following a scent, they forget about everything else, including their own safety. Allowing them off-leash could mean certain disaster. Bassets are NOT slow movers, as portrayed in the media! Bassets are a loving and sensitive breed. Their greatest desire is to be kept close to their human family, enjoying all the companionship that closeness entails.
